Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ungan is a family physician, academic, and lifelong advocate for
equitable, person-centred care. He is Professor of Family Medicine at Ankara University
School of Medicine and has dedicated more than three decades to strengthening
primary care within national and global health systems.

He served as President of WONCA Europe (2019–2021) and Chair of the European
General Practice Research Network (EGPRN) (2016–2019). He is currently Co-Chair
of the Scientific Committee of the WONCA World Conference 2025. His extensive
collaborations with WHO Europe, the European Medicines Agency (EMA), the European
Cancer Organisation, and EU4Health reflect his strong commitment to advancing family
medicine through evidence-based policy, international partnerships, and capacity
building.

Prof. Ungan has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications focusing on migrant
health, patient empowerment, disease prevention, vaccination, and physician wellbeing.
In addition to his academic and research roles, he has served on international juries and
evaluation committees for professorial and academic appointments in several European
countries, as well as in Türkiye, contributing to academic quality assurance and faculty
development at an international level.

Alongside his academic career, he established family medicine practices in Ankara and
Istanbul and led international migrant health screening initiatives in coordination with the
CDC, IOM, and ICMC.

Beyond medicine, he actively supports youth education through scholarship programs
and remains deeply committed to service at both local and global levels. He is the
recipient of the “Katharina von Quensberg Award” from the Royal College of General
Practitioners for his leadership in advancing family medicine, and has been honoured by
the Medical University of Plovdiv with the “Dedicated to Humanity” plaque on the
occasion of its 80th anniversary.

Married to a fellow family physician, he shares his personal and professional life with
their two children—Nazlı, a lawyer based in New York, and Efe, a medical doctor
specializing in radiology.
