Schistosomiasis Expert

Eyrun Kjetland (MD, PhD) is a medical doctor and researcher, a Professor at University of KwaZulu-Natal and Director of BRIGHT Research Academy, KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa). In Norway, she is leads Oslo University Hospital Research Group in Tropical, Imported Infectious and Reproductive Diseases and is a clinician specialising in Infectious Diseases. She has lead research projects on genital schistosomiasis and HIV in Zimbabwe, Madagascar, Kenya, and Malawi and has published more than 70 articles. In collaboration with the WHO and UNAIDS, she has co-written the “No more neglect — Female genital schistosomiasis and HIV — Integrating sexual and reproductive health interventions to improve women’s lives” report. She is supported by a steering committee with members from three countries. She leads the work to make the WHO Pocket Atlas for Female Schistosomiasis. The English version was launched at South African Society for Obstetrics and Gynaecology (SASOG) and the French version at International Conference on AIDS and STIs in Africa (ICASA) in Abidjan, Ivory Coast in 2017. She has tutored more than 50 Masters students and brought 6 PhDs on Female Genital Schistosomiasis to completion.
